Magic Crafts
It all started when we had a Hogwarts party for Halloween 2005...
First it's your robes for the party. Then you need a wand, of course. Before you know it, you have an owl, a broomstick, a stack of magic books, and an apothecary that Professor Snape would be proud of. In other words: We created a monster! or a Monster Book of Monsters in Lena's case.
Here are some of the crafts we've made in our costuming and prop-making quests. Double-click to see them closer. Tips and how-to's are at the very bottom of the page...
(I'd love to post pictures of your crafts...)
1- Monster Book of Monsters- by Lena Hawks. Using a papier mache book from Michaels and Lena's talents!
2&3- Cutter & Sparks Travel-Size Apothecary- By Salli Thompson. Made from an old SINGER sewing box and a bunch of random stuff. If making a small apothecary: I recommend chosing the container you are going to use and then getting the viles and bottles that fit. I snagged most of the bottles at a garage sale and the small viles from the dollar store toy section.
4- Some of my potion bottles and accoutrements. I put a quarter down as well so you could get an idea of scale. (L to R) Lionfish spine (salmon spine boiled, cleaned and stored on corn syrup), Boomslang skin-female (wannabe brown snake-skin cabbaged from a high-heel shoe),Armadillo Bile (green and yellow food coloring), Gillyweed (the tails of gelly-like fishing lures stored in corn syrup), Knotgrass (spanish-moss-like stuff I snagged off of a tree), Lacewing Flies (long story, but Lisa used little fishing lure flies), Lavendar, Bubotuber Pus (Cornsyrup with a tiny amount of yellow coloring and just enough corn starch to make it opaque), Dragon's blood (Red food coloring). The scale is cabbaged from a brass postal scale and fits neatly inside my kit. Below it are scales 'from a Welsh Green' (Large pinecone petals painted with transparent green and a light wash of gold).
5-My OWLS diploma- By Salli Thompson
6-My reproduction of the Bertie Botts Beans Box from the movies, feel free to print out! (Lena, take a picture of your frog boxes and send it to me! Those were awesome!)
7-Cage for scabbers by Cyndi (?)
8-Dueling Carpet by Salli. Acrylics on Canvas cloth. (Tip, fill in the moons with white first, then paint over it with yellow. The yellow paint is very translucent by itself.)
